Matchmaker, Matchmaker, Make me a Match

We’ve pulled together a few more images to share with you guys of the work being done by our various art teams.

The ytram cave on Boiler Island

The maglev station on Boiler Island

The beginnings of our wahrk model

The lower level of Survey Island

Not much else to report, other than that things are progressing very well around here, and that we’re looking for more help!

    Nice !

Looking good ! Keep up the hard work, you guys have no idea how excited I am for this. (:

  • The green butterfly Says:

Sweet! Do you know the tusks are missing on the whark?

  • Andross Says:

Tusks, what tusks! Are you saying that there are tusks on the wahrk?! Who knew!! 😉

  • Gorobay Says:

Cyan consistently spelled it “whark” while developing Riven. An exception was the “wahrk” in Catherine’s journal. I suspect that that was a typo, but fans decided that it was actually the right spelling. Since most online content about the creature is written by fans, the spelling “wahrk” predominates. I would therefore consider both to be valid spellings.

    • The green butterfly Says:

      Okay, thanks!

      • Andross Says:

And perhaps somewhat oddly, it doesn’t really change the pronunciation either way you spell it, either. In Cyan’s defence, it’s also worth noting that Catherine’s first language was Rivenese, and so may have misspelled the word in English. Also, before the invention of the mechanised printing press, spelling was very variable anyway. Even (especially) in English.
More than likely it was a Typo, but there are a couple of possible retcons for the mistake.

        • The green butterfly Says:

What will be used in RealRiven? Will the supposed typo be corrected? And what does Cyan say about the spelling? They could end the uncertainty about the spelling of these creatures…

  • The green butterfly Says:

Okay, you also don’t have to choose which spelling to use then! Clever! 🙂

I also have another question: when I first played Riven and reached the whark statue on Village Island, I discovered the secret entrance to the statue by pulling something on top of one of the two metal sphere-things, but that led to reaching certain places too early. I used the submarine in the village to go directly to the prison cell, leaving the sub on a place I couldn’t get back to, but never went into the classroom to learn the D’ni numbers so I had to start again and I was spoiled about the secret entrance and some other stuff. Will you add something that you can only open the statue from the forrest side if you already came through from the other side, so people who haven’t played the game yet, wouldn’t accidentaly open it and focus on the wrong stuff on the wrong moment like I did?

    • Andross Says:

There is no too early or too late, that’s the whole idea of Riven 😉 You just needed to climb back up the ladder and up to the top of the gallows to get back to the sub.

      • The green butterfly Says:

I thought you can’t get down on the gallows, it’s a one-way up… So that leaves the sub stuck at the bottom of the gallows

  • The green butterfly Says:

I checked and it’s true! Why didn’t I discover that the first time? But entering the wahrk statue too early triggers the cutscene with the little girl in the forest too early, and you can trigger an impossibility by calling the mag-lev to Jungle Island, going to Survey Island through Boiler Island and see Gehn flee from you in a mag-lev that shouldn’t be there. Weird.

    • Gorobay Says:

The cut scene with the girl is meant to play then. It is not too early.

There is no impossibility about the mag-lev. In the time it takes you to go to Survey Island via Boiler Island, Gehn’s scribe (not Gehn himself) has ample opportunity to push the call button or ride the mag-lev to get it back to Survey Island.

      • The green butterfly Says:

True, but I don’t think Cyan wanted us to discover the entrane to the wahrk statue so early. I didn’t know it wasn’t Gehn on Survey Island, it was just a guy wearing a lot of robes, and I assumed it was Gehn… Riven not being on HD graphics on the cutscenes on iPad doesn’t really help…

        • Python Says:

If Cyan didn’t want us to discover it, they could have disabled it until we come in the other way.

          • The green butterfly Says:

Don’t forget the button is very well-hidden! Unfortunately, I saw the potential of the knob on the sphere being a hidden button…

You guys are okay right? No update in almost 3 months, starting to get worried.
